Former Penguin Adam Johnson's death last night devastated the hockey world. News of his death has sparked a debate about protective equipment in the NHL.

New Protective Rules Coming To NHL?

The NHL has seen its fair share of close calls, such as when Edmonton's Evander Kane's wrist was cut last season but no player has ever died from a skate related injury sustained during a game. Johnson's death reminds us just how dangerous the sport can be though. Several players on the Providence Bruins took it upon themselves to wear neck protectors during their game tonight.

In addition to this, the NHL player association is reportedly discussing neck protection with the league. They are asking the league to ensure standard neck protection is made available to all players when the next collective bargaining agreement is due. For now, players and teams will have to take it upon themselves to wear the protection as the league is unlikely to make a rules change mid-season.
