Major Incident in SHL Game Involving a Referee.
Professional Leagues must prioritize the safety of their players above all. This commitment doesn't stop at players; it includes referees as well.
During a recent game in the SHL, an official found himself in harm's way.
Albin Lundin, playing for Timra, tripped a linesman, resulting in a massive fine and suspension.
Here's the incident:
Lundin will serve a three-game suspension and pay a 10,000 Swedish krona fine (around $900 US).
League and Player React to Incident
The SHL made a statement explaining their decision:
"The board finds that Albin Lundin was, in any case, indifferent to the collision with the linesman. It should also be noted that Albin Lundin did not even stop after knocking the referee to the ice or take any other notice of the incident."
After the game, Lundin provided his side of the situation:
"After the whistle blew, I looked up at the jumbotron to see what happened. I know I ran into the referee, but I wanted to see with how much force. After that, I went straight up to the official to apologize and tell him it wasn't on purpose. I apologized several times to the linesman."
"I just tried to move forward when I left the bench; I went straight forward the whole time. You can debate whether I should have seen him, absolutely, but I didn't."
It's been announced that the Manager of Timra, Kimmo Kapanen, will file an appeal.
Updates will follow.
