The Ottawa Senators are dealing with just about as much as they possibly could be right now with the absence of Shane Pinto looming over them. A cap-strapped situation mixed with roster troubles has made for a difficult offseason, but one of their biggest problems has seemingly been swept under the rug.

Formenton Staying OVerseas

Alex Formenton was once a promising piece on the Ottawa Senators, but his potential involvement in the 2018 Team Canada WJC scandal prompted OTaawa to refuse to sign him. Because of this, the forward hasn't played for the Senators since the 2021-2022 NHL season, and it doesn't look like that's going to change.
Alex Formenton has signed a deal to return to Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss League until Christmas. It can be extended through the rest of the season. #Sens

Yesterday it was announced that Formenton had signed a contract extension with Ambrì-Piotta of the Swiss NL, where he played last season. While this contract is only until Christmas, it includes not only the option for him to extend it throughout the full year but also a clause that allows him to return to the NHL should he be offered a contract.

Ambrì-Piotta Makes a Statement

Following the announcement of this signing, Formenton's Swiss club made an announcement on social media regarding the situation.
"The club is aware that there is an ongoing investigation and to date there has been no charge nor conviction against the player. The club reserves the right to review the contractual situation with the player should new elements emerge.

"The player, for his part, has the possibility of returning to the NHL at any time if the second investigation were to resolve like the first with nothing done. Out of respect for the ongoing investigations, the player and club will not release further statements on the situation."

While it seems unlikely that Formenton ever returns to the NHL, he's certainly keeping his options open in the meantime.
