After a stellar 2021-22 campaign, the Calgary Flames were expected to be a contender in the West last season, but after losing offensive firepower with Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, nothing at all went according to plan.

No fun in Calgary

One of the players that disappointed most was former Panthers star Jonathan Huberdeau, who came to Calgary in the Tkachuk trade, and unfortunately, things couldn't have gone worse.
After a career high 115 points the season prior, Huberdeau struggled to get anything going with his new teammates, and now, he's opened up on what made his first season with the Flames a nightmare.
I just wasn't, you know, I just didn't have fun last year. It was the first time in my career that I kind of lost the passion a little bit, to come to the rink. The way I was playing on the ice, it wasn't me. It kind of frustrated me.

Problem solved?

While many things no doubt went into this (Canadian media, building chemistry, struggles as a team), the most obvious reason was the coach Darryl Sutter, who has been criticized for the way he handled the season, ultimately leading to his dismissal in Calgary.
It may not be a guarantee that Huberdeau bounces back this year, but with Elias Lindholm and a new offensive system in place, things are looking up for the Flames, who could see a big bounce back year if No. 10 hits his strides.
