Rangers Fans Turn on Alexis Lafreniere After Embarrassing Effort

Lafreniere is no stranger to criticism, as he has been in the limelight for underperforming since he was drafted by the Rangers with the first overall pick in 2020.

Now, fans have reignited their displeasure with his skills after a recent play during the Rangers-Islanders game. In the play, Lafreniere can be seen seemingly giving up on the puck at around centre ice, putting him in a bad position which leads to an Islanders goal.

The lack of effort from the young forward has fans questioning how badly he really wants to be on the Team since his past performances haven't earned him the benefit of the doubt on slack play like this.

It's no question that Lafreniere has not lived up to expectations in New York. The former first-overall pick was expected to help the Rangers go on a long playoff run, however, he has failed to even perform for himself. He has yet to break the 20-goal mark in the NHL, and his career high is a meagre 39 points.

These numbers wouldn't be bad if Lafreniere was expected to be just a depth scorer for the Rangers. However, he was touted as the next superstar for the club, and he clearly hasn't met those expectations. If he hopes to stay in the Big Apple, a good performance this year will determine his fate.
