Here are some possible situations that would have played out differently if Toronto pulled the trigger on that trade:
— Cory Schneider is never traded to New Jersey, becomes an all-time Vancouver Canuck goaltender
—
Bo Horvat becomes a New Jersey Devil (if they keep the same picks)
— Assuming Toronto's pick doesn't get better or worse, Vancouver can collect Nylander/Ehlers at 8th overall as the 2 consensus picks at that spot - they can also get BC
Shea Theodore (someone Vancouver's front office has shown interest in) at 23rd overall in 2013
— Kadri, Nylander, Theodore, and Gardiner could have been the beginning of a strong core in Vancouver - they likely never begin the Pettersson/Hughes/Demko arc
— Markstrom never leaves Florida in IRL Luongo trade - they likely pick higher than 11th in 2015, take another power forward (Meier, Rantanen, Zacha) to pair with Barkov
— Toronto has better odds in 2013 Game 7 and likely beats Boston that year - they have a decent shot at making the cup finals (O6 Matchup in Finals CHI vs TOR)
— With Luongo, the Toronto window stays open for longer - Kessel likely remains a Leaf for longer and never goes to Pittsburgh
— When Toronto ultimately rebuilds, it would take a lot longer as they don't have Nylander & Kadri
— Without Luongo, Vancouver could have fallen out of playoffs in 2013 and gotten Domi, Pulock, or Morrissey that season
Luongo was rumoured to go to Toronto for a number of seasons before ultimately becoming a Panther again where he retired. It remains one of the biggest what-ifs in Toronto, Vancouver, and NHL history.
