The deadline to sign college prospects was earlier this week. A few of them became unrestricted free agents.

That's the case of Jay O'Brien, the Philadelphia Flyers' 2018 first-round pick.

Flyers Lose Prospect

The Flyers have officially lost O'Brien, as he decided not to sign an entry-level contract with Philadelphia.

He spent the last three seasons in the NCAA, playing for Boston University, and he scored 70 points in 79 games during that time.

Flyers to Receive Compensation

Because O'Brien was a first round pick and he didn't sign with his team, the Flyers will officially be compensated by the NHL.

"Since the Flyers didn't sign Jay O'Brien to an entry-level contract, the Flyers will receive a compensatory 2nd round pick (51st overall) in the 2024 draft.

Jay O'Brien was originally the 19th overall pick back in 2018. O'Brien is now a UFA and can sign with any NHL team."

It's yet to be determined if O'Brien will sign a contract with another team, but teams struggling with the salary cap could be interested in a player with an entry-level salary.

Updates will follow.
