An insider has provided a massive update regarding Auston Matthews' contract and fans are excited.

Matthews To Break Record

Rumors seem to be that Matthews is ready to sign a contract extension in Toronto but there are slight hold-ups.

Insider Nick Kypreos has provided an update on Auston Matthews' contract situation and what the hold-up is with it.

"I don't know whether we're in a blinking contest or not between Nylander and Matthews or who needs to go first, but if I'm Auston Matthews, I'm not holding my breath on Nylander's contract getting done at all at any point this summer. So, how far does Matthews want to go into the season, now, without a contract? If it is as close as everyone is reporting - and everyone that I've talked to says it's a $13.5M AAV - then what is the term? I think for me, the biggest decision right now, which I think Auston can't decide on or they haven't made a final decision is, is how many years will what we believe is a $13.5M AAV last?"

How Will This Work

The Maple Leafs will need to move some money if they want to sign Matthews to this record-breaking contract. Many are beginning to speculate that William Nylander will need to be moved in order to sign Matthews long-term.

Nylander is currently under contract for just under $7 million for one more year but is demanding 8 figures for his next contract.

That plus Matthews' raise of just a shed under $2 million puts the Leafs at a total of $5 million more which is something they simply cannot afford.

Moving Nylander would clear up cap space for Matthews' contract and ensure that the Leafs can keep the 2021-22 MVP.
