The Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers are two franchises on completely different trajectories. The Oilers are hoping to win the 2024 Stanley Cup while the Flyers are hoping to win the 2024 draft lottery.
With that, it has resulted in the Oilers and Flyers looking into brokering a trade that gives the Oilers a top Flyer forward.
In a recent article for The Hockey News, Michael DeRosa has linked the Oilers to two Flyers forwards, Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton.
So of the two, which should the Oilers be more focused on acquiring? The two are very different players and would fill two completely different roles.
Konecny provides elite offense and would be the final piece in the Oilers top six that include McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Kane, and Hyman. Konecny was the number one forward on the Flyers scoring 31 goals and 61 points in 60 games.
Laughton on the other hand is much more of an elite third line player. He plays fantastic defense and would surely be Edmonton's third line center and would shut down other teams top players. While he is known for his defensive and physical capabilities, he can chip in offensively potting 18 goals and 43 points this past season.
Whichever of the two Edmonton decides to more aggressively pursue will dictate what they want to prioirize going forward. Would be it be a player who can compliment their star players on their line or shut down the opposing teams top lines.
Neither will come cheap so it will likely be a one or the other situation unless Edmonton decides to break the bank for both of them.
