Brad Treliving hit a home run yesterday when he signed one of the top UFAs of this year: Tyler Bertuzzi.

The one-year, $5.5 million deal seems like a great price to acquire one of the most competitive players in the NHL.
With Gary Bettman's decision to raise the cap by only 1 million this year, teams are scrambling and can't pay for top players, as most are already close to the cap ceiling.
This led to an interesting declaration by TSN's Andy Strickland.

Teams Left Embarrassed by Their Offers

As you can see, he reports that many teams were interested, but none had enough cap space to give him the money he asked for. They are reportedly embarrassed by the situation.
"Tyler Bertuzzi could have signed with several teams on a 1-yr deal. Florida, Nashville, Carolina among them. Teams are almost embarrassed with the lack of money they can offer. He's betting a year with Matthews/Marner will set him up nicely as a UFA next summer."

Also, with the cap set to be raised next season, signing a one-year deal is a strategic move. As Strickland noted, playing with Marner and Matthews will surely help him ink a sweet deal when he becomes a free agent again next year.
