A junior team is speaking out after the NHL's decision to end the use of speciality warmup jerseys.

OHL teams speaks out in favor of jerseys

The NHL had decided to end it's tradition of having warmup jerseys for certain events, after criticism came from religious advocates over the NHL's usage of Pride jerseys, meant to signify support for members of the LGBT+ community. As well, the jerseys became notable when NHLers including Sharks G James Reimer and Panthers' brothers Eric and Marc Staal wished not to wear the jerseys, citing religious beliefs, and sat out the warm-ups, where the jerseys were being used.

In a tweet, the OHL's Oshawa Generals affirmed their support for the LGBT+ community, being one of the most active teams in the CHL in support of LGBT+ rights, the team confirmed they would wear pride jerseys after the announcement of the NHLs ceasing of theirs.

Not just pride jerseys will not be worn by NHL clubs, as well, jerseys for 'Hockey Fights Cancer' and 'Military Appreciation Night'.

The NHL received backlash for their support of LGBT+ rights, in a time of renewed criticism against support for the LGBT+ community, although the NHL has signified it's supoort for diversity in full, a current wave of backlash has made the league's support much more controversial to some, including some of it's own players.

'You Can Play', a NHL-backed organization that works to grow LGBT+ visibility in sports and provides support to the LGBT+ community via the league, said in a statement that they were "concerned and disappointed" by the decision, urging for visible inclusion in the NHL. All 32 teams have a 'You Can Play' ambassador, a team player who is meant to be an ally for LGBT+ rights.

Although the league ending Pride jerseys will be the big story, other symbolic nights have now lost their visibility as well, and due to a current divisive politicization, now the league has decided to do away with all festive nights, including games meant to raise awareness for important issues, including for nights dedicated to fighting Cancer.

The games will still go on, and the league will still partner with specific initiatives, but to LGBT allies, the move isn't one that is being viewed in the right direction.
