The days of a bench clearing brawl are way in the past. Teams don't often have the same kind of passion or emotion that we saw regularly in the 70's and 80's. But over the weekend two teams found themselves with the benches clearing.
During a Women's Worlds game between Romania and Bulgaria the two teams cleared the benches. After a 7 goal 3rd period Romania took a 10-2 lead over their opponents. Something Bulgaria didn't appreciate. That's when things took a wild turn

554 penalty minute game.
In the final game host Romania played Bulgaria to determine 4th place. Romania erupted for 7 goals in the third period to win 10-2 in what was already a chippy game. Bulgaria had 2 game misconducts throughout the match and a fighting penalty.
19 players were given 25 minute penalties while Romania also was assessed a 20 minute penalty for abuse of officials. Of course with the tournament being over it means nothing, but we'll see if the IIHF assesses suspensions for further tournaments.
