Don Cherry, the former host of Coaches Corner and a prominent figure in Canadian hockey, has long been an advocate for fighting in the game. Despite facing criticism for his views, Cherry has remained firm in his belief that fighting plays an important role in keeping the game safe by deterring dirty play and protecting players.

However, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League recently announced a ban on fighting starting next season. In a recent episode of the Grapevine Podcast, Cherry shared his thoughts on the issue and discussed comments made by former player Bobby Nadeau.

Nadeau, who was famously attacked by Patrick Roy's son Jonathan during a game, surprised many by suggesting that banning fighting could actually make the game more dangerous if other dirty and violent plays are not also addressed. When asked for his own opinion, Cherry reaffirmed his belief that fighting has a place in the sport.

He got the heck kicked out of him so they thought 'This is a good guy to talk to because he would be against fighting' but he was pretty good. He said 'This could lead to more vicious play', and the other thing he said was 'Will lead to players feeling more brave with their stick' and nobody expected him to be the guy [to take that position.]

Do you believe fighting still has a place in hockey?
