With the culture shift from physical hockey to skilled hockey, the NHL is trending towards the eventuality of eliminating fighting altogether.

The QMJHL has already made the decision to ban the act for next season, which has spurred its own criticisms. The question of whether fighting as a whole will last in the NHL launched a hotly contested debate centered around player safety.

On the one hand, limiting and/or removing fighting - according to some - will result in a net-positive concerning the safety of players. Minnesota Wild enforcer Ryan Reaves broke down the opposing viewpoint, suggesting that removing fighting provides a clear lane to injure the game's biggest stars without consequence.
