On Wednesday, a report came out from The Hockey News stating that the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will be banning fighting starting in the 2023-24 season.

The league is expected to have a rule in place that will make it fighting a thing of the past, but punishment for those who do drop the mitts has yet to be determined.

Following the report, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier, who has 15 NHL fights to his name since entering the league during the 2020-21 season and 30 while playing in the QMJHL, spoke out on Twitter about the ban.

"Not every player is gonna make it pro as a top 6 F / top 4 D and this hurts players that want to do whatever it takes to make it. Sad to see the Quebec Government force the league into this when the players have no say in the matter."

The debate on banning fighting in the QMJHL has been going back to September 2020 ever since Quebec minister Isabelle Charest said that the league needed to do so in order to receive government funding. Two weeks after that, the league announced stiffer penalties for fighting, but now this news will completely ban fighting, being the first of the three major junior league in Canada to take a stand.

Do you agree with the QMJHL's decision to ban fighting or does Mathieu Olivier have a point here? Have your say in the poll below.
