The Washington Capitals announced on Saturday afternoon that they've agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension worth $9 million ($3 million AAV) with defenceman Trevor Van Riemsdyk.

Van Riemsdyk, 31, is in his third season with the Capitals and has already surpassed his previous career-highs for goals and points, earning himself this extension, rather than hitting the open market on July 1st.

In 66 games this season, the Middletown (New Jersey) native has 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists), 15 penalty minutes and is a plus-12. Ever since the Capitals dealt Dmitry Orlov to the Boston Bruins, Van Riemsdyk has seen his ice-time go up quite a bit. During Thursday's shootout loss to New Jersey, he skated in a season-high 27:23 TOI. In fact, the three highest ice-times of the season for Van Riemsdyk have call come after the Orlov trade.
