According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Boston Bruins have acquired forward Garnet Hathaway and defenceman Dmitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals.

In exchange, the Capitals receive forward Craig Smith, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick. The Capitals have also retained 50% of Orlov's salary.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild have gotten involved to help with salary and have retained 25% of Orlov's salary.

Hathaway, 31, has appeared in 59 games for Washington this season, putting up 16 points (nine goals, seven assists), 52 penalty minutes and is a plus-six.

Orlov, 31, has 19 points (three goals, 16 assists), ten penalty minutes and is a plus-two in 43 games this season. He's spent his entire NHL career thus far with the Capitals after they selected him in the second round in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Smith, 33, has recorded ten points (four goals, six assists), 14 penalty minutes and is a plus-four in 42 games for the Bruins this season.

"We would like to thank Dmitry and Garnet for their contributions to our organization," said Capitals GM Brian MacLellan. "Dmitry has been with our organization for almost 14 years and was a key contributor in helping us win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Garnet has been an important part of our team and a role model off the ice for his contributions to our community. We wish both players all the best with Boston."

Hathaway, Orlov and Smith are all set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st.
