Andrei Markov was a fan-favourite in Montreal and his home country of Russia during his more than 16 years in the NHL. That wasn't enough to save him from getting the axe in his current position, though.

Sport-express.ru is reporting that Markov has been fired from his associate coaching position with HC Spartak Moscow of the KHL. Markov was responsible for the defensive side of things with the team. He is being replaced by fellow former NHL defenceman Igor Ulanov, who played close to 800 career games with several different teams.

Markov's firing comes after Spartak's 7-4 loss to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on Tuesday. Spartak currrently sits in seventh place in the KHL's Western Conference, with a record of 23 wins and 30 losses. Markov was hired by the team in May of 2021 after announcing his retirement from professional hockey. Markov spent his entire NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens. He played for four different team in the KHL. Spartak was not one of them.
