Flyers Defenseman Declined to Participate in Warmups for Controversial Reason
According to several insiders, Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov sat for warmups on Tuesday night because he declined to wear the team's LGBTQ+ Pride jerseys.
The Flyers released the following statement through a spokesperson on the matter:
"The Philadelphia Flyers organization is committed to inclusivity and is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community. Many of our players are active in their support of local LGBTQ+ organizations, and we were proud to host our annual Pride Night again this year. The Flyers will continue to be strong advocates for inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community."
Provorov did dress for the game, so there's that. Head coach John Tortorella had the following to say in support of his player:
"With Provy, he's being true to himself and to his religion,» John Tortorella said about why Ivan Provorov did not skate in warmups with the team when they wore Pride jerseys on Pride Night. He was the only player who didn't skate. The rest wore the jerseys."
As sensitive as this issue is, Provorov's actions and Tortorella's comments absolutely ruffled some feathers, but the magnitude of the situation is yet to be determined.
