In Friday night's overtime win over the San Jose Sharks, the Anaheim Ducks' tying goal has sent the annals of hockey discourse into a bit of a fizz. With just under seven minutes to play, Mason McTavish knotted things up, which would ultimately send the game into extra time.

Immediately after scoring, McTavish can be seen uttering to his teammates that the play was offsides, which it appeared to be at first glance.

Alas, the goal counted and McTavish was credited with his ninth of the season. The explanation was essentially the same one we received for Cale Makar's equally controversial playoff call during the Avs' 2022 Stanley Cup run.

The puck carrier - defenseman Cam Fowler - technically didn't have possession of the puck, therefore Adam Henrique was never offsides. At least, that is how it was ruled per the call on the ice and a review.

It would take a little over sixty seconds for the Ducks to take the game, thanks to first-year defenseman John Klingberg.

Sharks head coach David Quinn said he received no explanation for the play and maintains that it was offsides.

"After watching it, I still think it was offsides. No one tagged up. Someone has to tag up there."
