The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that the club's longest-tenured player, Sean Couturier, underwent yet another back surgery following a recent setback, shifting his timeline back even further. They estimate it could take 3-4 months before he is ready for action, which even seems optimistic, frankly.

Not long ago, the Flyers openly proclaimed that Couturier would be back sooner than expected. After a strong start, that is exactly what this team needed to ensure their season wasn't defined merely by a hot start. Alas, they will have to wait for the return of arguably their best player.

Couturier has not played since December 18, 2021, coming up on a full year. His second back surgery is seriously disconcerting. Some put his chances to play again at <50%, but that might be a little extreme. Although, the pessimism is understandable.
