The Buffalo Sabres announced on Wednesday that they've agreed to terms on a seven-year contract extension worth $30 million ($4.285 million AAV) with defenceman Mattias Samuelsson.

"I've taken huge jumps," Samuelsson said in the spring following the 2021-22 season. "Personally, I think just being up here for however many games it was, the style of play, we play with no hesitation. I think it allows you to develop and just play on instincts rather than thinking so much of systems or details or anything like that. I think I've grown a lot as a player this year and can carry that over into next year training camp, and just keep going."

The contract extension, which kicks in for the 2023-24 season, is an interesting one. Samuelsson is only 22-years-old and doesn't have a whole lot of experience at the NHL level. He's only played 54 games and has 12 assists in parts of two seasons with the Sabres.

Samuelsson split time between the Sabres and their AHL affiliate in Rochester for the 2021-22 season. In 22 games with Rochester, he put up 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) and in 42 games with Buffalo, he had 10 assists.
