The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced today that Pittsburgh Penguins defender Jeff Petry had been fined $5,000 for roughing Red Wings' prospect Jonatan Berggren.

Petry threw a pretty blatant right cross to the back of Berggren's head and caught the Swede clean. Not sure what the veteran defenseman was thinking in that moment.

Petry did offer clarification, suggesting he was not attempting to punch the back of Berggren's head, instead saying he was merely looking to make a defensive play.

"I was just trying to punch/push the top of shoulder to kind of knock him off balance. It grazed off the top of his shoulder and went up. I wasn't trying to punch him in the back of the head or anything like that."

Sure, Jeff ;)

Berggren was not injured on the play, and the league did not find it egregious enough to warrant a suspension. Petry, who makes over $6 million per season, will simply part ways with a light $5,000 fine.
