After a very successful hockey career both on and off the ice, Brian Sutter is calling it a day. He has announced he's retiring, and leaving his position has head coach of the Innisfail Eagles effective immediately.

Sutter told Mountain View Today that at 65 years of age, it's time to step back and spend some time with his family.

"The players make commitments to come and play, and so I owe it to them to be there all the time. I didn't feel it was right that I was going to call once in a while and say I couldn't be there. That's the biggest thing for me. I didn't want to say I was going to be there and then once in a while not be there. I'm not that type of person. I know when you make a commitment to something you need commitment to it all the way." - Brian Sutter.

Brian is, of course, a member of the famous Sutter 6, brothers who all played in the NHL. Brian spent his entire playing career with the St. Louis Blues, and is the only Sutter brother to have his number retired by an NHL team. Immediately after his retirement as a player, he was named head coach of the Blues, and won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach in 1991. Sutter also held head coaching positions with the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and Chicago Blackhawks. After leaving the NHL in 2004, he became head coach of the Bentley Generals of the Chinook Hockey League. After a brief stint with the WHL's Red Deer Rebels, Sutter returned to the Generals, and then moved on to Innisfail in 2012. He's been there ever since.

"Brian is a great person. He's a great mentor. He's just a phenomenal coach," said Ryan Dodd, the Eagles' general manager. "Brian has done so many amazing things for our hockey organization, and for our town."

HIs replacement at Innisfail has not yet been named.
