Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick Kirill Tankov was taken to intensive care by ambulance Monday after a hard hit from behind into the boards during a game in Russia. Tankov was playing for SKA-Neva of the VHL when he was plastered into the boards by Artyom Maltsev. Tankov stayed down for a long time before finally getting on a stretcher and getting off the ice. Maltsev was booted from the game.

"It`s an alarming situation," said SKA-Neva head coach Alexander Titov. "Let's hope that everything will be alright. The player was taken to the hospital for tests and had a splint put on his neck.

"I hope that this injury will not be terrible and serious," he added.

At last check, Sport-Express.ru stated that Tankov remained in intensive care. He did remain conscious during the incident. It will likely take at least a couple of days before medical officials can put a timeline on Tankov's return.

Tankov was drafted in the seventh round (218th overall) in 2021 by the Pens. SKA Neva serves as the farm team for the KHL's SKA ST. Petersburg.
