The Buffalo Sabres announced today that F Tage Thompson has signed a brand new seven-year, $50 million contract extension (~7.14M AAV). Kevin Weekes was the first one to break the signing, so kudos to him.

Thompson had an absolutely stellar season in 2021-22, totaling 38 goals, 30 assists for 68 points in 78 games for the Sabres. Acquired in the infamous Ryan O'Reilly trade, the 6'7'' center could be a critical piece for Buffalo going forward, especially at that new price tag. The deal is a tad risky, as Thompson's previous career best in points was 14 just a year prior, but I think it's pretty safe to say this kid is legit.

Still only 24, Tage Thompson still has a ton of room for growth, especially on the defensive side of the puck, which should only be made easier by his enormous frame. A real strong suit in his game is his cannon of a shot, which -- again -- is aided by the fact that he is almost seven feet tall on skates and puts ~220lbs behind each shot. Buffalo's future looks as bright as ever, and locking up Thompson long term ought to solidify their situation going forward.
