The Vegas Golden Knights announced today they have re-signed F Nicolas Roy to a five-year, $15 million ($3M AAV) contract extension:

Nicolas Roy was a fourth-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, acquired by the Vegas Golden Knights in a trade that saw Erik Haula shipped to Carolina in exchange. In 156 games with Vegas, Roy has managed 64 points, and in 2021-22 he scored a career-best 39 points in 78 games.

The 25-year old winger needs work defensively, but on offense he is a quality playmaker who produced at a high rate in a fairly limited role. His poor penalty differential coupled with the fact that he is a non-factor on defense could see improvement under Bruce Cassidy. I suppose it is also possible that Cassidy grows tired of him and buries Roy in the lineup.

Either way, Roy gets the Brandon Tanev deal and could see time in Vegas' top-six in 2022-23. After the signing, Vegas is $5.8 million over the NHL's salary cap with Shea Weber's $7 million+ as well as $3.5 million assigned to IR, which could later be placed on LTIR. Still, GM Kelly McCrimmon still needs to find a way to clear at least $2.3 million off his books. William Karlsson's $5.9 million cap-hit makes a lot of sense, although that would leave the Golden Knights without a true second-line center. The Golden Knights' roster is a mess, and it is all thanks to the management of McCrimmon and President George McPhee.
