According to David Pagnotta, talks between the Calgary Flames and newly acquired defenseman Mackenzie Weegar are ramping up.

After facing the reality of losing two-thirds of the best line in hockey--Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau--Flames GM Brad Treliving made out like a bandit when he traded the former to Florida, netting Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, plus a pick and a prospect.

The Flames have already locked Huberdeau to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension, which was a critical component of the trade's assessment. If Treliving can sign Weegar as well, the Flames probably made out better than Florida did in the deal, which is crazy to consider when you think about the leverage the Flames' GM did not have.

If the Flames can secure Weegar long-term, consider it a colossal 'W' for Treliving and the Calgary faithful. After winning the Pacific Division title in 2021-22, the Flames might field an even stronger group in 2022-23 in spite of Tkachuk and Gaudreau moving on. They will be missed, but Calgary made out just fine all things considered.
