It is growing ever more popular for NHL clubs to move their AHL & ECHL affiliate teams closer to home. Logistically, it is easier to house and otherwise accommodate the players & their families with less travel time as they get called up/sent down. Also, cheaper. Lots of AHL teams are 10+ hour drives from their NHL clubs' home cities. In some cases, we are talking crossing the US/Canada border, which is no small task.

Ever since the pandemic, teams are finding it cheaper and easier to simply relocate their affiliates closer to home. Which brings us to the Calgary Flames. Previously, their AHL team played in Stockton, California which is approximately 20 hours by car. The Flames announced some months ago that they were moving the minor-league team closer to home. Today, they announced the logo & name of the new team.

The Calgary Wranglers will fit right into Calgary's culture, right next to the Saddledome, the Calgary Stampede, the Calgary Stampeders, etc. Also, personnel going from team to team won't have to clear customs.

The logo is pretty basic, I feel like they can and will do more with as they develop more of an identity. Because the word 'Wranglers' is cool, but not that cool.

The Calgary Flames organization has the 19th ranked prospect pool, according to Hockey Prospecting; the 18th ranked skater group and the 16th ranked goaltending group. The Heat from Stockton fell in the third round of the 2022 Calder Cup playoffs, so they will go into the 2022-23 season with some momentum and maybe even a chip on their shoulder.
