This is one of those trades that makes absolutely no sense; it is near unfathomable that a team can make such a bad trade, but nevertheless the Vegas Golden Knights & their cap problems exist & nothing makes sense. The Golden Knights have traded F Max Pacioretty & prospect Dylan Coghlan to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for future considerations. That is right, a perennial 30-goal scorer just got traded for absolutely nothing after the Golden Knights traded Nick Suzuki, a 2nd Round Pick, & Tomas Tatar to aquire:

It is almost inconceivable to think that any professional sports team can be managed so poorly. Seravalli pointed out the following moves the Golden Knights have made as a result of their cap management:

Pacioretty is indeed a perennial 30-goal scorer. He scored at a 30-goal pace in eight of his 14 NHL seasons, including three of the past five. Although dealing with some injuries lately, the 33-year old forward is a game-breaker & the Hurricanes made out like bandits.

Dylan Coghlan also went to Carolina in the trade, as if the deal wasn't lopsided enough. Coghlan, 24, is a right-shooting defenseman with 19 points in 88 NHL games. He hasn't shown a ton of promise, yielding replacement-level results in a sheltered role:

Regardless of how Coughlin turns out, this trade is another colossal 'L' for the Vegas Golden Knights' management, and it would not be a surprise to see a changing of the guard there in the next couple of years. Unless, perhaps, they can put together a successful season in 2022-23 under newly appointed Head Coach Bruce Cassidy.
