An absolutely crazy situation is taking place in Russia for Philadelphia Flyers' prospect Ivan Fedotov. The 25-year-old netminder has spent the past six seasons in the KHL before finally signing a one-year entry-level contract with the Flyers in May. It appears his team and his country are not interested in having him leave.

It was reported Friday that Fedotov had been detained by police in Russia. Several reports stated police have sufficient grounds to consider him a draft dodger. A few hours later, it was reported that Fedotov had to be taken away from the Military Registration and Enlistment Office in St. Petersburg in the back of an ambulance. We now have footage of that, which was published on Telegram by a Russian news agency. Fedotov appears to be very ill in the back of the emergency vehicle.

What makes this so crazy is that, as far as anyone can tell, Fedotov's only connection to the Russian Military is playing for CSKA Moscow. The KHL team was once the Red Army, a nickname many fans still use. It seems there's still a connection between playing for the team and being in the army, even if only in an honourary sense. There is speculation outside of Russia that this is only happening because Fedotov wants to leave for North America. Not one of his Gagarin Cup winning teammates with CSKA Moscow is currently fighting in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is expected we'll find out more in the coming days. Both the NHL and the Flyers have stated they are looking into the incident, but really haven't said anything other than that.
