Less than 48 hours ago, the Edmonton Oilers fell to the Colorado Avalanche in overtime of Game 4 in the Western Conference Final, ending their playoff run.

During their season-ending media availability, Oilers goaltender Mike Smith told reporters that he's not sure if he'll continue playing, adding that it's too early to tell.

"It's too early to tell. To look ahead now after you just get ousted out of the conference finals, it's hard to see where you're gonna be in the next two days, let alone four months from now," Smith said.

He added, "I think there's a lot of things to deal with mentally and physically, and that doesn't have to be decided in the next three minutes."

The 40-year-old has one-year remaining on his contract with a base salary of $2.5 million.

Regardless if Smith returns next season or retires, the Oilers will need to go out and explore the trade and free agent market for an upgrade in net. The tandem of Smith and Koskinen were not good enough in the regular season and if it wasn't for Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, and a few others, the Oilers may not have made it out of the first round against Los Angeles.

If Smith does retire, overall he did have a fairly good career with the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. In 2012, he played a massive role in helping the Coyotes reach their first and so far only Western Conference Final.
