The National Hockey League announced on Friday that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is the 2021-22 recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

For those who aren't familiar with this award, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is handed out annually to the player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey."

Price, 34, had surgery on his knee following the 2021 Stanley Cup Final in July and by the time training camp rolled around in September, he wasn't ready to go.

Shortly after the 2021-22 season commenced, Price voluntarily entered the NHL-NHLPA Player Assistance Program which he later said was to help with substance abuse.

In November, Price exited the program and began his knee rehab once again, but in December, the Canadiens were forced to close their practice facility due to a COVID-19 outbreak around the NHL.

After meeting with doctors in January, Price had to restart rehab on his knee from the beginning due to the time he missed on the ice. He pushed and worked tirelessly to return to the crease for the Canadiens and ultimately, that day came.

On April 15th against the New York Islanders, Price made his season debut and return to the crease for the first time since Game 5 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. The Canadiens lost 3-0, but Price had a shutout through two periods. Price went on to appear in four more games before the season ended and won one game, making 37 saves in a 10-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on April 29th.

Congratulations to Carey Price on this well deserved honour. He worked extremely hard to get back between the pipes for the Canadiens this season.
