Since being drafted in the first-round (29 overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2018, Rasmus Sandin has had plenty of hype.

While he is highly skilled, however, he has yet to truly make an impact at the NHL level, in large part due to having a number of defencemen ahead of him on the depth chart. According to Elliotte Friedman, Leafs management may be considering moving one of their current blueliners in order to give more opportunity to the 22-year-old moving forward.

"Sandin, he needs a new contract and Toronto doesn't have a lot of space," Friedman said. "I think that they like him as a player, I think he's enjoyed being a Maple Leaf and I don't believe he's asked for a trade or anything like that. But, I've had a couple of people say to me, watch where this goes in terms of does Toronto feel they have to create room for him? Is he concerned about his spot and also is there a deal here that makes sense? With Giordano now being signed, they now have five lefties. Brodie plays the weak side, I'm just including him in cause I know someone would say, 'Hey, Brodie's a lefty, you idiot.' There's Muzzin, there's Giordano, there's Reilly, there's Sandin."

As Friedman said, this will be an interesting situation to watch shake out if indeed this is what the Leafs are looking to do, as all of those players are very valuable. Having said that, Sandin boasts a ton of potential and has proven over the past few seasons in the American Hockey League just how good he can be when given the opportunity. While he did play 51 games at the NHL level this season, he was extremely limited, averaging less than 17 minutes of ice time per game.
