2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship day 3 recap

Day 3 at the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship has wrapped up and it provided six highly entertaining games. In Group A, Canada took on Italy, France faced Kazakhstan and Denmark battled Switzerland. In Group B it was Norway vs Great Britain, Austria vs United States and Czechia vs Sweden.

The early morning games (5:20 a.m. ET/12:20 p.m. local) saw Canada dispatch Italy by a score of 6-1. Montreal Canadiens forward Josh Anderson scored the game winner, added an assist and was named 'Player of the Game'.

Canada's goals: Travis Sanheim, Josh Anderson, Nicolas Roy, Kent Johnson, Dysin Mayo, Noah Gregor.
Italy's goal: Phil Pietroniro.

Norway went up 3-0 on Great Britain after two periods, but Ben Bowns stood on his head. Great Britain scored three goals in just over three minutes to tie the game. The game then headed to overtime, but that solved nothing and in the shootout, Norwegian forward Michael Haga scored the winner to give his nation a 4-3 win.

Norway's goals: Andreas Klavestad, Mathis Olimb (x2).
Great Britain's goals: Robert Dowd, Brett Perlini, Mark Richardson.

In the second game of the day in Helsinki, France scored twice in the second period as they downed Kazakhstan, 2-1.

France's goals: Alexandre Texier, Florian Chakiachvili.
Kazakhstan's goal: Valeri Orekhov.

Meanwhile in Tampere, Austria blew a 2-0 lead against the United States, as 2021 fourth overall pick Luke Hughes scored the overtime winner.

United States' goals: Kieffer Bellows, Adam Gaudette, Luke Hughes.
Austria's goals: Benjamin Nissner, Paul Huber.

The afternoon games had plenty of scoring with 14 goals between Sweden/Czechia and Switzerland/Denmark.

Sweden used a three-goal second period to propel themselves to a 5-3 win over Czechia and improve to 2-0-0-0. Rasmus Asplund scored twice, while Czechia captain Roman Cervenka had three assists in the loss.

Sweden's goals: Rasmus Asplund (x2), Mathias Brome, Emil Bemstrom, Anton Bengtsson.
Czechia's goals: David Krejci, Matej Blumel, Tomas Kundratek.

Switzerland netminder Leonardo Genoni made 19 saves to earn the shutout in a 6-0 win over Denmark. Denis Malgin had four points (one goal, three assists). Montreal Canadiens prospect Frederik Dichow got the start for Denmark, but allowed five goals on 25 shots and was replaced by Sebastian Dahm to start the third period,

Switzerland's goals: Fabrice Herzog, Timo Meier, Pius Suter, Janis Moser, Philipp Kurashev, Denis Malgin.
