Earlier this season, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stated that the Calgary Flames were in need of a new arena, and he echoed similar sentiments on Tuesday afternoon.

«If we're going to hold any league events here, there needs to be a new building,» Bettman told reporters. «I don't think that comes as a surprise to anybody.

«I think it's a priority for the City of Calgary, I think it's a priority for the Flames, I think it's a priority for the people that live in Calgary and want concerts and family shows in addition to NHL hockey.»

Earlier this year, it appeared the city and Flames ownership had an agreement in place to start construction on a new building, but the deal fell through just days before construction was set to take place. The two parties have since tried to renegotiate, but to no avail thus far. As of now, the team is continuing to play out of the Saddledome, a building which has been around since 1983.
