Back in late February, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced that Russia would no longer host the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship due to their unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. This move left the tournament without a host, with it set to get underway on Boxing Day.

Several weeks after Russia was removed as the host, the IIHF asked Hockey Canada if they could hold the tournament. Hockey Canada ultimately said yes and a final decision is expected to be made as early as Thursday.

Ten cities are vying to host the tournament, but according to TSN's Chris Johnston, the bid from Halifax and Moncton has emerged as the front runner to be the host.

"We're going to know soon. And, you know, there's already been some talks it's going to be Halifax and Moncton, that they're the favourites among the five bids. Well Hockey Canada has not made a final decision. In fact, there is another call with the selection committee on Thursday where they're going to continue to work through this. But this tournament coming up in December and January, it's pretty soon, they're trying to get to that conclusion very quickly." Johnston said on Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading.

The other potential hosts are: Quebec City/Trois-Rivières, Vancouver/Victoria, London/Kitchener, and Regina/Saskatoon.
