Some sad news to report on Thursday as former tenth overall pick of the Minnesota North Stars, Tom McCarthy, has passed away at the age of 61.

McCarthy spent parts of nine seasons in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins. In 460 games, McCarthy tallied 399 points (178 goals, 221 assists), and 330 penalty minutes. Despite spending the majority of his final season in the minors, McCarthy appeared in 13 games for the Bruins in their run to the Stanley Cup Final in 1988, where they were ultimately swept by the Edmonton Oilers.

After his career was over, McCarthy turned his attention to coaching. He was the head coach of the North Bay Trappers, Espanola Rivermen and Espanola Express of the NOJHL, as well as HSC Csíkszereda of the Romanian Hockey League.

Our thoughts are with the McCarthy family at this difficult time.
