Many have been perplexed the past two days trying to figure out whether or not a trade between the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks will be accepted or vetoed by the NHL. We'll, we now have an answer.

According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the NHL has nixed the trade.

Frank Seravalli confirmed this, with a statement from the league.

"The trade could not be concluded because Dadonov's contract includes a limited no-trade clause, which has not been complied with."

For those who may have missed it, the Golden Knights attempted to clear cap space by trading Evgenii Dadonov along with a conditional second-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for John Moore and the contract of retired forward Ryan Kesler. However, the trade was reviewed by the NHL as Dadonov had a 10-team no trade list in his contract, and one of those 10 teams included the Ducks.

Many were quick to assume the Golden Knights knew this all along and were hoping to get away with it in order to clear up cap space, but that may not be the case. Elliotte Friedman did his best to explain the ordeal on his 32 Thoughts Podcast. The gist of what he said is that both the Golden Knights and NHL were under the belief that when the Ottawa Senators traded the 33-year-old this summer, his contract no longer had any no trade clauses in it.

Why exactly that was the case is undetermined, but Friedman believes that both parties thought Dadonov and his agent either didn't file the no trade list at any point, or they were under the assumption that the list they received was an old one, and the new version was never filed.

This is an extremely odd situation. The big question now is what happens with Dadanov? Going back to the Golden Knights would be an extremely awkward situation. Technically, he can still be traded. However, he would not be allowed to play for another team for the rest of this regular season or the playoffs, which would be very unfair to him.
