The New York Islanders have been a perennial playoff contender in the NHL for the past several seasons. A lot of this is thanks to general manager Lou Lamoriello and his roster construction. However, his days on the island might be numbered.

NHL Insider Makes A Bold Prediciton

As part of a series called 32 Bold Predictions NHL insider Frank Seravalli made a bold prediction for every team. The New York Islanders' bold prediction was in regard to Lou Lamoriello and his imminent retirement.
"After 35 years and three Stanley Cups, this will be Lou Lamoriello's last season as an NHL general manager. The NHL's only octogenarian GM, sharp as ever, will celebrate his 81st birthday on Oct. 21. But the New York Islanders will fall short of the playoffs this season and after doubling and tripling down on this roster, change is inevitable."

Now of course this is only a bold prediction and not rooted in intel or fact. However, with Lamoriello nearing age 81 it does feel like it's on the horizon.

Islanders Looking Ahead To The Future

While Lamoriello might not be the general manager much longer he has set up the roster to be the same long term. He extended Scott Mayfield, Pierre Engvall, and Semyon Varlamov this past summer. Other players like Mathew Barzal, Ryan Pulock, and Bo Horvat are also around long-term.
This means that despite his potential retirement the impacts of Lou Lamoriello's decisions will last for many seasons. While some Islanders fans see the long-term deals as a good thing many others believe Lamoriello has ruined the future of the Islanders.
Only time will be able to tell if the Islanders' strategy of extending this group will work out. If they win a Stanley Cup even if it's after Lamoriello is gone he will be celebrated. If they come out of these contracts empty handed it may tarnish a lot of the good things Lou Lamoriello has brought to the Islanders.
