Auston Matthews famously grew up in the hockey mega market that is Arizona. As such, he did grow up a fan of the Coyotes but his team disappointed him a lot as they have never really found sustained success.
Matthews Roasts Coyotes
In a hilarious moment of a recent interview, Auston Matthews was asked what teams he hated as a kid. His response was both hilarious and a bit sad.
"I didn't really dislike any teams honestly. The Coyotes were never good enough like, to have a rival."
Between 2002 and 2016, Matthews' draft year, the Coyotes made the playoffs just four times. They won two rounds, both in 2012 as the franchise made its first and only conference finals appearance. Over that same stretch the team boasted a points percentage over .500 just six times. Matthews certainly earned the right to make fun of his favorite childhood team.
