Brad Marchand goes into hyper-pest mode until he gets kicked out of game (Full recap w/video)
Since being suspended for a slewfoot on Vancouver's Oliver Ekman-Larsson back in November, Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins had seemingly turned over a new leaf. The notorious pest had even started to endear himself to fan bases outside of the Bruins with some funny comments on Twitter, as well as a video taken after warm ups on a fan's phone that Marchand had taken from him while heading back into the tunnel. All of that was undone Tuesday night when Marchand went on a tirade against the Pittsburgh Penguins that eventually got him booted from the game.
It seemed to start with this move, when Pens' goaltender Tristan Jarry was about to put a puck over the glass to a fan at the end of the second period. Marchand would skate by and smack the puck off of Jarry's stick with his own.
Off the very first faceoff of the third, there was a sequence where Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby broke his stick and was attempting to get back to the bench to grab a new one. Marchand, in a move rarely seen in the NHL, did his absolute best not to let Crosby by him, preventing him from getting a new twig.
Then came what was the final straw for the officials. During a stoppage in play at the Penguins' net, Marchand would deliver a hard right hand to the side of the head of Jarry out of nowhere. As an official was trying to get him off the ice, Marchand would go back to Jarry and shove the blade of his stick in the goaltender's face.
It's not clear what got Marchand in such a surly mood Tuesday night, although there's a theory it was this play from Jarry that set him off.
All of this would likely be viewed differently if Marchand wasn't such an offensively gifted player who has the ability to change the outcome of games. The Penguins won this one 4-2 and it's highly likely there will be at least a fine, if not a suspension coming for Marchand. The match penalty carries an automatic one game suspension (at least) pending review from the Department of Player Safety. Marchand has been suspended seven times in his career and has lost just under $1 million in forfeited salary.
