A community group in Tempe, Arizona, is launching a campaign against using taxpayers dollars to help build a new Arizona Coyotes arena.

The campaign is being spread over text message, where residents can get redirected to Tempe City Council to say no to tax payer dollars going towards the arena. The Coyotes are looking into a $1.7 billion development which would include an arena, hotels, apartments and shops that would be financed by owner Alex Meruelo as well as private investors. However, they are also looking to use some of the city sales tax revenue to help pay for $200 million in additional costs to get the land ready.

This is yet another ugly look for the Coyotes, who are having tons of troubles finding a new home. Recently, a report came out that said they were considering playing out of Arizona State University next season, an arena that seats just 5,000. While that was reportedly true, the team is claiming that if a new arena is built in Tempe, taxpayers would not be on the hook for it.

«We completely agree that Tempe taxpayers should not be responsible – which is why we have proposed an entirely privately-financed development,» the team said. «The only public dollars related to the project will be utilized for public infrastructure and remediation of the former landfill – and we will make use of an economic structure that has already resulted in numerous successful developments along Tempe Town Lake.»

There had been talks for some time now that the Coyotes, who are being forced out of the Gila Riva Arena in Glendale, are considering Tempe as their future home. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but it would almost certainly help them draw more attendance.
