It's not the news Winnipeg Jets fans were wanting to hear on Saturday morning. The team announced that forward Nikolaj Ehlers has been placed on long-term injured reserve.

Ehlers, 25, was injured following a knee-on-knee collision on Tuesday with Washington Capitals defenceman Dmitry Orlov. No penalty was called on the play, but Orlov was handed a two-game suspension from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

Per the NHL's LTIR rules, Ehlers could return to the Jets lineup as early as mid-February.

"This means Nikolaj Ehlers is out at least 10 games or 24 days, likely retroactive to Jan. 18. So earliest Ehlers could be back appears to be Feb. 14 vs. CHI," the Fourth Period's Frank Seravalli said.

The Aalborg, Denmark native has appeared in 34 games this season for the Jets, recording 25 points (13 G, 12 A), 14 penalty minutes, and is a plus-eight.

Winnipeg also announced that captain Blake Wheeler has been activated off long-term injured reserve. Wheeler was placed on LTIR following a collision during a game against Vancouver in early-January.

The Jets are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 3pm ET against the Boston Bruins.
