After not having a home for the first-half of the 2021-22 season, veteran forward Justin Abdelkader has signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

In October 2020, following a decline in his play over the previous few years, the Red Wings bought out the remaining three years of his contract, making him a free agent. A few months following the buyout, Abdelkader signed a one-year contract with EV Zug in Switzerland.

The Muskegon, Michigan native could set a new Grand Rapids Griffins record if he plays in Saturday night's game against Milwaukee.

"Should Abdelkader play on Saturday when Grand Rapids hosts Milwaukee at 7 p.m., he would set the new standard for longest time span between Griffins appearances at 4,305 days, or 11 years, nine months and 12 days (April 10, 2010 to Jan. 22, 2022). The record is currently held by Jonathan Ericsson at 3,888 days, or 10 years, seven months and 22 days (March 1, 2009 to Oct. 23, 2019)," the Griffins said in their press release.

Abdelkader, 34, was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round back in 2005. He spent thirteen seasons in the Red Wings organization, including parts of two seasons with Grand Rapids. In 739 NHL games, Abdelkader had 252 points (106 G, 146 A) and 608 penalty minutes.
