Hughes is one of three remaining candidates for the role alongside Danny Briere and Mathieu Darche. Hughes was initially not interested in the role, but according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, he's re-entered the search process.
Sportsnet's Jeff Marek posed the question, "What would dissuade Kent Hughes away from this job at this point in his career and life?"
Elliotte Friedman responded with, "You know, first of all, finances always matter. What's the deal? You're leaving something that is secure in terms of you're the boss. And yeah, you're still going to be making a lot of decisions here, but the security isn't the same."
He added, "And number two, another agent said to me this weekend. You never know what the financial arrangements are. What do you have tied up in your agency? That agency that Kent Hughes runs was bought a couple of years ago by the Saputo family. What's his deal with them? An agent just can't wake up one day and say, I'm leaving the firm. Oh no! There's a battle over..do you have equity in the firm? What happens to that? What happens to your clients? You know, the other thing is, like I said, he's got a couple of kids, who are really good players. You know, does he want to be on one team or does he want to be able to follow his kids around?"
Hughes' current clients include Patrice Bergeron, Kris Letang, Darnell Nurse, Drake Batherson, Anton Khudobin, among others.
There's no timeline for Montreal to name their new general manager, but it's been reported that they are close to making a decision and that one could come at some point this week.
