NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly had a virtual meeting with Quebec's Finance minister Eric Girard and deputy Finance minister Pierre Cote on Thursday to discuss a potential return of the Nordiques.

Following the meeting, Bettman and Daly released a joint statement saying that although they appreciate the interest, the NHL has no current opportunities for the Nordiques to return.

"We had a cordial meeting with Mr. Girard and Mr. Cote this morning, during which they once again expressed Quebec's passion for hockey and Quebec City's profound interest in seeing the NHL return to Quebec City," they said.

The statement continued by saying, "We explained that, while we were appreciative and flattered by the interest expressed, unfortunately, we were not aware of any opportunity that could address that interest at the current time. We appreciate that the lines of communication between the parties have been refreshed, and we agreed to stay in touch with each other as circumstances warrant going forward."

Although the statement mentions that there isn't any current opportunities that could see the Nordiques return, one many arise in the coming months.

Tonight, Tempe City Council are meeting and expected to vote on the Arizona Coyotes' arena plan. Although, the vote is expected to go against the plan as reported earlier this week by Coyotes insider Craig Morgan. Morgan said that there are three votes for yes, two votes for no and two votes that are undecided but leaning towards no.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Arizona Coyotes were to relocate to Quebec City, re-alignment would need to happen as the Atlantic Division would have nine teams and Central Division would have seven. The most logical move in my opinion would have the Detroit Red Wings join the Central Divsion.
