Heading into the 2021-22 season, Calgary Flames fans were hopeful that Andrew Mangiapane, whose contract is up at seasons end, would soon be extended.

The 25-year-old is one of the leagues most underrated players, and got off to a scorching hot start this season. While his play has cooled off since, he still has an impressive 18 goals in 33 games and will require a hefty raise from his current $2.425 cap hit. However, while a raise is a guarantee, it likely won't come on a long-term deal. His agent, Ritch Winter, recently spoke with Eric Francis and discussed why he believes a short-term deal is best for his client.

«My advice to him would be let's do a short-term deal, by way of arbitration or negotiation, negotiation ideally, and then let's wait and take a look at the landscape,» Winter said. «Because as a young player you want to be the best you can be, you want to be challenged in Stanley Cup type environments. These are the kind of decisions Marian Hossa made around his trip to Detroit and then to Chicago.»

These comments have to be very concerning for Flames fans, as it sounds like Winter and possibly even Mangiapane don't seem the Flames as a Cup contender. If that is the case, he may sign another short-term deal that will then walk him to free agency in hopes of joining an elite team. Of course, there are still plenty of variables here, but these comments are very interesting to say the least.
