Former San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane has cleared unconditional waivers and will have his contract terminated, making him an unrestricted free agent. Kane will now forfeit the remaining roughly $22.9 million owed to him by the Sharks.

Following the news yesterday that he was placed on unconditional waivers, the San Jose Sharks came out with a statement that read, "The San Jose Sharks have informed Evander Kane that he has been placed on unconditional waivers with intent to terminate his contract for breach of his NHL Standard Player Contract and for violation of the AHL COVID-19 protocols. The Club will have no further comment on this matter."

Later on in the day, it was revealed by Kevin Kurz of The Athletic that the reason for Kane being on unconditional waivers was that he took a trip up to Vancouver when he was supposed to be isolating in San Jose following a positive COVID-19 test.

Kane's agent Dan Milstein and the NHLPA both came out with statements saying that they will file a grievance.

"We are aware of the Sharks' decision to put Evander on waivers for contract termination," said Dan Milstein. "If he clears, we will file a grievance. The Sharks do not have sufficient grounds for taking this action"

"We are aware of the San Jose Sharks' stated intent to terminate Evander Kane's contract. The NHLPA intends to challenge any such action by filing a grievance," said the National Hockey League Players Association.
