About two hours ago, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the San Jose Sharks have placed Evander Kane on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract buyout.

The Sharks then released a statement that read, "The San Jose Sharks have informed Evander Kane that he has been placed on unconditional waivers with intent to terminate his contract for breach of his NHL Standard Player Contract and for violation of the AHL COVID-19 protocols."

"The Club will have no further comment on this matter."

According to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, the Sharks terminated his contract because he traveled to Vancouver while positive for COVID-19.

"The Sharks' Evander Kane contract termination stems primarily from him traveling to Vancouver while COVID positive, according to multiple sources." Kurz said in a tweet.

Kane, 30, has made plenty of headlines off the ice for the wrong reasons this season. He was suspended by the NHL, 21 games prior to the start of the 2021-22 season for violating COVID-19 protocol. He also has had some off-ice legal issues involving his estranged wife, Anna. He was born and raised in the Vancouver area.
